Fishermen and Women....

After a long cold winter (sure wish it would leave). We are looking forward to an exciting season of fishing in Frankfort, and Benzie County. Early data from the Michigan DNR suggests that we should have another excellent year for the Salmon. The creel census says that the numbers will continue to be high with fish running in the 12 to 14 pound size class for this year.

A better run for the Steelhead this spring, according to the reports, with some of the Wolff Lake plants already returning at about 18". Still not the numbers that we would like to see, but better progress than in the past years. With that fishery finished in the rivers for now, some decent days of fishing for the Brown Trout have been had, and we expect to have some more. The best fishing for the Browns has been from the boats that are trolling the coastline. Most of the fish caught in the last week have come from water depths of 5 to 16 feet. Long lines and trolling Rapalas in Gold/Black, Silver/Black, Chartreuse/Silver, and the Challenger Jr. minnow in the brown trout pattern along with blue and silver. The few fish caught on the piers have come on spawn and by casting 3/8 oz Krocodiles (MOP) and Pearl/Fishscale.

On Crystal Lake the Perch fishing has been Hot ands Cold. When it's hot, it has been along the south shore. Look for the perch in 40 foot of water. This time of year wigglers and minnows will produce.

Not much to report from the Trout Opener or for Walleye. The fishing was like the recent weather, drizzly and cold.

Mark your calendars for these up-coming events:

The 2nd Annual Frankfort Firecracker 4000 fishing tournament will once again be on the 4th of July. Four hours fishing, weigh 4 biggest fish, entry $400, and First Place= $4000. One winner and $500 for biggest fish. For more information, call the Tackle Box at 231-352-7673.

The Benzie Fishing Frenzy will take place, August 22-24, 2008 in Frankfort. This is also a stop on the Tournament Trail along with the 333. For information call the Chamber of Commerce 231-352-7251.

Don't forget to renew your membership to the Benzie County Sport Fishing Association. This will get you into the big fish contest for each month, help with the Orsini hatchery project, and get an invite to the fall banquet. Membership forms available at the Tackle box.
